inspired by the david ellis [aka ‘skwerm’] from the barnstormers at the ill communication II graffiti exhibition at the urbis in manchester.
In October 2004 Geoff Donnelly & Dave Lynch experimented with the fusion of video and graffiti by creating a series of films on canvas.

In the beginning we just filmed with a
static camera at four frames a second
as was seen at the exhibition.

We then started to move
the canvas whilst drawing
at the same time.

We then thought it would be easier to move
the camera. it was here we also found that we
could revisit a drawing and add to it,
therefore the original drawing would only
exist on the video and the finished canvas
would tell a different story.
The narrative would exist only on
the video.

we back projected an image on to a sheet of
perspex, stuck a sheet of paper on the
reverse side, so the image would shine
through.

it was at this point we realised the movie lacked pace and the narrative was lost with movement of the hand so it was decided to document it.

It was here that saccadism was born

This time the camera was hand held and able
to follow the sketches around the canvas.
Now the order of the drawings would be the
narrative, where as the finished canvas
would have no sense of order just collage.
the two pieces would complement each other
to a point of not completely understanding
one with out the other.

now we film a test movie of geoff walking and
sitting - The movie is then edited to play at
4 frames a second.
we then film in time lapse at four frames a
second the background should play in real
time as well as the drawing in the time-lapse

all in camera.

these experiments lead to saccadism, an art-form and practice. with the advent of video cameras on mobile technology. The process is accessible to everyone.

If anyone has reference to other practices that are similar (probably done in the 60s) then please let us know, we researched but found nothing.
